Composition Shingles

Constructed from asphalt, fiberglass and mineral granules, Composition Shingles are the most common type of roof covering used on homes in the U.S.

Composition Shingles come in two basic designs:  "3-tab" and "architectural".  3-Tab Shingles have either a 20-year or a 25-year warranty, and carry a wind rating of 60 miles per hour.  25-Year shingles are available with algae-resistant additives.

For greater protection and beauty, consider Architectural Shingles.  Architectural shingles give a roof more "texture" due to additional tabs that are attached (laminated) to each shingle.  Architectural shingles come with 30-Year, 40-Year or Lifetime warranties, depending on the thickness of their construction.  Wind warranties range from 70 to 110 m.p.h.

A new development in Composition Shingles is the "Impact-Resistant" Shingle.  Designed with hail protection in mind, Impact-Resistant Shingles are constructed specially to quality for a UL Class 4 rating, the highest available in roofing products.  Most homeowners insurance companies offer discounts for homes with this type of roof.

The main drawback to Composition Shingles is their limited life expectancy.  Heat, strong sunlight, poor attic ventilation and severe weather, conditions that are common in our area, reduce the service life of Composition Shingles.
